Map of Submarines in WW1
There is no way to tell who exactly invented the first submarine, there were many different people creating them, in different ways. The first time these warships were used in World War One was on March 17, when German submarines sank three American merchant vessels.
Why were Submarines used?
Submarines were used to sink ships of Germany’s enemies. They were responsible for the destruction of half the food and supplies transported by the British Navy. They were easy to use because they would travel underwater and could not be seen.
How do Submarines work?
The submarines would travel underwater. Looking through periscopes to see the ships above water. Would then surface and then sink the ships with torpedoes or the guns they carried.

Pros and Cons of Submarine use
Pros- -could travel undetected, unless above water -cheaply produced -did not have to return for extended amounts of time Cons- -had to surface to sink a ship -limited space for crew |

Impact on the War
The submarines used in WW1 did not only affect the soldiers fighting (while stile sinking vessels with soldiers and supplies on them), submarines also had impacts on civilians too. During the war the German U-boats sunk about 5,000 ships. These ships were not just part of countries navies, some of these ships were merchant vessels, like the first three American ships that were sunk on March 17. These ships had men, women, and children on them that had nothing to do with the war. One of the biggest advantages these submarines had was the fact that they could travel underwater, and unseen, making it very hard for German enemies to stop the submarines.

Connection to Modern Day
Still in use today, submarines have been improved on a great scale by modern technology. Two major advancements would be the ability to shoot their torpedoes underwater, and not having to load torpedoes by hand.
